September Mentor Meeting

For my teacher mentor, I chose my 9th grade English teacher. Her classroom environment felt safe and secure for me, and by choosing her for my mentor I got the chance to get an inside look on how she does it. I was able to ask Mrs. Mathys what she found most challenging about being a teacher to which she responded “being there for everyone of her students.” I can see how as a teacher that would be a struggle. The reason I want to be a teacher is to make a change in a young child’s life, but I learned from Mrs. Mathys that I can’t get caught up on every kid because I will then lose site of the other kids that look up to me as a role model.

According to Mrs. Mathys, she always wanted to be a teacher but wasn’t able when she first graduated college because her parents wanted her to be more successful. She told me that eventually she gave up on caring what others thought of her and went back to school to be a teacher and has been one for 26 years.

Mrs. Mathys is one of the teachers that assured me teaching is the right career for me. I have always looked up to her as a role model and aspire to create a classroom culture like hers one day.
